The sprawling 7,000 acres of Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park encompass a variety of different terrains, including forests, prairies, and wetlands. More than 1,600 acres of the land have been restored, with bison inhabiting two enclosed pastures. White Barn Lagoon is a spot favored by many bird watchers. Sightings of nearly 100 species, including peregrine falcons and European starlings, have been reported. A number of the dozen trails are well-suited for family and dog outings. Battelle Darby Creek is open year-round from 6:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.

On its own, Hogback Ridge Park is a lovely, dog-friendly place to spend a day of bird watching. Winding trails make their way through wooded ravines that are home to wild turkeys, pileated woodpeckers, and many other species. For a real treat, take the Woodland Ridge Trail to the Equestrian Trail to a spot on Alum Creek dubbed "Osprey Overlook." Enjoy breathtaking sights of these stunning birds fishing, feeding their young and interacting with other osprey. Bird watching is part of higher education at the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park. The 52-acre facility sits just on the northern edge of the Ohio State University Campus. Faculty and students use the park for research and training on ecosystems, landscapes, and other environmental matters. The park and its greenway trails, paved paths, and observation pavilion are open to the public daily from dawn until dusk.

Such occurrences are relatively frequent at Hoover Reservoir Park, a peaceful spot located a mere 20 minutes from Columbus. Mud Hen Marsh, one of several preserves in the area, offers great opportunities to view the marsh's namesake as well as the Northern Cardinal, Eastern Kingbird, and House Finch. Situated on the grounds of Camp Mary Orton, ZipZone offers a two-hour tour over 20 acres of forest. The Adventure Park, opened in 2017, adds a new dimension to your ziplining experience. Choose from five different climbing courses, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, and make your way through the challenging elements. Guides provide 30-40 minutes of instruction beforehand, and all participants are locked to a lifeline cable with double-connected safety clips. Wee ones can join in the fun at the Kids Park, a modified version of the Adventure Park. Courses are only a few feet off the ground to make it easy for kids between aged 4 to 7. Like many areas in Northeast Ohio, Mohican State Park owes its spectacular scenery to the Ice Age. More than 14,000 years ago, glaciers traveled across the landscape, carving gorges and creating mineral and rock deposits. Mohican's centerpiece, Clear Fork Gorge, plummets 300 feet deep and measures more than 1,000 feet across at its top. The park has several recently remodeled two-bedroom cabins along the Clear Fork River, some where pets are permitted, that sleep up to six guests. Anglers flock to Mohican for largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, and brown trout. If you want more active pursuits, check out the park's numerous hiking and biking trails, some of which pass the Gorge as well as two waterfalls and a covered bridge.

Anchored by a stunning 150-acre natural "kettle" lake, Punderson State Park offers a wide range of activities to satisfy all ages. The perfect small dog park for those who want to sit and relax, the Frank Fetch Memorial Park was modeled after a 19th Century German "Bier Garten." It features extensive landscaping, decorative lights, brick walkways, and picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend while your dogs play.
A wrought iron fence gives the park an "old world" look that you're sure to love. It's also well-appointed with plenty of doggie bags and water stations.

In addition to its other amenities, the 23-acre Pizzurro Park features a 4-acre, fenced-in, off-leash dog park. There's a separate area for dogs under 25 pounds and an agility course for dogs of all sizes. There's also a paved trail through the large-dog area, which makes it wheelchair friendly. There are restrooms on-site and trails where you can walk or jog with your dog on-leash.

Do you enjoy running with your dog? Then you'll love the 6.1-mile, dog-friendly Heritage Trail. This paved trail runs from downtown to Cemetary Pike. There's also a 4-acre off-leash dog park with separate fenced-in areas for small and large dogs to play.

Like most dog parks in the area, this park offers separate play areas for large and small dogs. It's also light, so dogs and their owners can continue to safely play after the sun goes down. There are also three fenced water areas for those dogs who love to swim!
Want to help out? This park has a monthly meetup on the last Saturday of each month from 10 am until noon. This is a great way to meet like-minded people (and their dogs!) while also working on small improvement projects around the park.
